Montenegro Tiny Chapel

While we were traveling, MJ and I came upon this tiny chapel in rural Montenegro.  She went on a guided tour of a museum while I photographed the exterior and some areas of the village.  That’s when I found this neat little church.

Cadet Chapel Spires

Hello Tuesday!!  How was your day?  My day was pretty good…

About this photo:  I took this shot last December while I was in Colorado Springs for a class.  I slipped away from the group and took an Uber out to the U.S. Air Force Academy to visit the Cadet Chapel.  I took all kinds of photos of the inside and outside using the traditional perspectives.  But I also took some unique perspectives like this one.  I was trying to capture this beautiful structure in a way that most wouldn’t have considered.

Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel

I took this photo in early December while I was in Colorado Springs.  I used an Uber to travel out to the Air Force Academy right before sunset to photograph this spot.  When I arrived, it was in the low 50s and I was comfortable.  When I left a few hours later, it was in the mid 30s and I wasn’t prepared.  I was freezing when the sun set and with the wind coming down the mountains onto this spot.  Regardless, I dealt with it.  I could have dealt with it better had I taken a coat (my fault for not planning ahead)….  But I didn’t.  Anyway, after I captured all the photos I wanted, I requested another Uber.  At that point, I started to get worried the Uber driver wouldn’t be able to come give me since the based closes to visits at 6pm (and I was really cold).  If the Uber driver got stopped at the gate, it would have been a 4 mile walk from my spot (the Chapel) to the gate to catch the ride.  As it turned out, the Uber driver got through and everything was fine.

By the way… you can see another photo I took of the Chapel’s interior at this LINK.

Cadel Chapel

I was in Colorado Springs recently and made a point to visit the U.S. Air Force Academy Cadet Chapel.  It was completed in 1962 based on a design by Walter Netsch.  It has become a classic example of modernist architecture, even though the design was controversial at the time.  This photo doesn’t include the best features of the chapel, which are the 17 spires.  I’ll share a photo of the exterior in the future so you can see the spires.  Another interesting feature of this chapel is that it houses five distinct worship (Protestant, Catholic, Jewish Islamic & Buddhist) areas within it.  All I can say about it is “wow”!!  It’s a great facility.

Holy Family

Tonight’s post is from Pittsburgh.  I took this picture on a scouting trip prior to the actual exploration day.  The water puddle caught my eye and I had to get this shot.  Anyway, I hope you have a great weekend.

Ceiling

Today’s photo is from the Basilica of National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC.  I took this photo during my last visit to Washington DC.  I’d love to go back, but they now have a renovation projection going on that will take a few years.  So it will be a while before the scaffolding comes down.  Maybe I’ll go back in a few years.

Beyond the scaffolding, this is an amazing facility.  It is the largest Roman Catholic Church in all of North America and is one of the largest churches in the world (its in the top ten).  It has so many great sanctuary locations inside with over 70 chapels and oratories.  Every chapel has a different style and design.  You could spend days in this facility and not catch all the little details.

Anyway, this photo is of one of the many dome ceilings looking straight up at it.  Have a great weekend.

Josh and Lacey

I’ve never met Josh and Lacey, but they have a great future together.  They’re getting married on June 27, 2017 in Pittsburgh.  They wanted to use a couple of my photos for their wedding website.  It was an honor communicating with Josh about their big day and being able to help them.  You can see the website here:  https://laceyandjoshwed.squarespace.com/when-where/#june-24-2017

Josh and Lacey, good luck and enjoy the ride!

Heinz Chapel

Heinz Chapel

Chapel of the Holy Cross

This church is surprisingly small on the inside and not as pretty as I expected.  The outside is a total opposite.  All beauty…….

This chapel was commissioned by local rancher Marquerite Brunswig Staude in 1957.  It was built on Coconino National Forest land and required a special-use permit.  They constructed it within 18 months and spent a total of $300,000 to complete the project.  Marquerite said that the “….chapel has a universal appeal.  Its doors will ever be open to one and all, regardless of creed,……”  Her wish has become reality.  The chapel has amazing appeal and thousands of visitors enter the facility every day.  And the doors to the chapel are opened every day to allow the visitors access.   What a cool, unique, and wonderful place.  Add the spot to your “must visit list”.

Oh, one more thing of interest.  This chapel sits on the so-called Sedona Vortices…..

By the way, if you celebrate Easter, I hope you have a wonderful Easter.

Washington National Cathedral - 2

I posted a picture last April from this location.  You can see that post and a lot of information about this church by clicking here:  http://brook-ward.com/blog/2014/4/26/washington-national-cathedral

So I won’t retype the details about the church you can read that using the link above.  But I will say that it is an outstanding example of English Gothic architecture.  Whatever that is….  I’ll rephrase.  It is an outstanding example of architecture.  Just wonderful and there are many levels with different rooms to explore.   I am not an expert in architecture or churches, so please forgive me if I get this wrong.  I found it interesting that there are several chapels throughout the Cathedral that have different styles and décor.

Anyway, regardless of whether you are religious or not….go visit this amazing place.  You won’t regret it.

Airline Phone Hell

MJ and I were trying to check into our flight for our upcoming trip and got an error message telling us to call the airline customer services.  Well, we’ve been on hold for over 2 hours with no contact except the same darn three airline ads playing over and over and over and over……  Airline Phone Hell!!!

So while I am waiting on hold, I decided to process a photo, which would bring calm thoughts to my current state.  Thus the picture of the stairwell from within the Heinz Chapel.  Something about this makes me relax.

Photo Technique:

This was a 9 exposure auto-bracketed set merged in Photomatix Pro with minor edits completed in Photoshop CS6.

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Teaser:  I should have some great pictures for you soon from my upcoming trip, assuming we ever get off the airline’s phone hold line.

Heinz Chapel Vertorama & The Start Of Watermarks

Tonight’s photo is a HDR Vertorama of the Heinz Chapel in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh.  This church is part of the University of Pittsburgh campus.  I haven’t completed a ton of panoramas or vertoramas, but I kind of liked this one.

The Start Of Watermarks

In the past and in the future, I have posted pictures under the copyright rules of Creative Commons, Non-Commercial, Attribution Required, No Derivatives.  All that means is that you are free to download my images and use them for free on your personal PC or electronic device for your wallpaper, screen saver, etc..

If you use a picture on your personal blog, you can as long as you link the picture to my site and give me credit.  What you can’t do is use the image for any commercial use without licensing the image from me with my permission.  I haven’t put Watermarks on my pictures because I thought you would appreciate clean pictures without that junk in the way.

I trust people in general and expect people to be honest.  So last night, I read an article by another photographer who does the same thing, but checks his images by searching the web occasionally.  So I tried that and was shocked!!!  I had one picture that was stolen and used on at least 20 commercial business sites.  So I spent the night contacting all of them to request they remove my photo from their sites.

Some sites took my photo, put their own Watermark on them and claimed the photos as their own.  Frustrated!!!  All of them are thieves.

So for now, I am going with Watermarks based on last night and my eye opening experience.
