Detroit's Eastern Market

I know that others like great graffiti art like I do, but we’re probably in the minority across the population.  Of course, everyone hates bad graffiti, basic “tags” or just people tagging any random building, wall, etc...  But great graffiti is as good as fine art, just on a larger scale in a public location.  So, if you like that type of thing, Detroit’s Eastern Market and Miami’s Wynwood Walls are amazing spots for this.  This photo is from the Eastern Market area of Detroit.  They host an international graffiti festival every year where they feature some of the world’s best.  This specific painting would probably fall into the Pop Culture art category, similar to Peter Max and others who work in this art genre.  Sorry I don’t know the name of the artist who completed this painting.

James Bullough

I took this photo during my last trip to Detroit in the Eastern Market area of the city.  They have a ton of amazing murals in this area that are done as part of their annual graffiti festival.  This area is worth a visit if you appreciate good street art.

This mural was done by James Bullough.  Bullough is an American born artist who lives and works in Berlin Germany.  The sun was a little to harsh when I took this photo, but I didn’t have benefit of waiting until the light changed.

Copy-Cat Photo

I don’t know who took this perspective first, but I’ve seen a ton of Pittsburgh based photographers post this exact composition over the last 6 weeks.  So, while we were downtown walking around yesterday capturing the city holiday scene, we captured this as well.  Dave posted his version yesterday…  Now it’s my turn.  I hope you enjoy this copy-cat photo.  Happy Holidays.

Eastern Market

Every time I go to Detroit to capture some urbex photos, I stop by Eastern Market.  I love this area of Detroit.  They’ve converted in into this hip area with cool shops, artist galleries and a huge farmer’s market.  There are still working ware houses and old factory buildings.  They’ve paid amazing graffiti artist from around the world to come paint these huge murals.  They even have a graffiti festival every year to celebrate these great artists and unveil new paintings.  This big mural is at the entrance to this area.

Pat Perry's Mural

We found this outstanding mural during our Detroit urban exploration weekend.  I love how the artist didn’t paint the entire wall, just used portions and left some of brick exposed as part of the mural.  He even worked around the windows and used one within the lantern.  I’m not 100% sure, but I think he painted this as part of the Murals in the Market festival.  You can see more of his work here: http://patperry.net/

Murals in The Market

I love Detroit’s Eastern Market district.  Every year they hold the Murals in The Market festival where they bring over 50 of the world’s best graffiti artist to paint amazing murals on the surrounding buildings.  The result is an exterior museum that’s open to everyone and art exhibits that change on an annual basis.  I’ve visited this location numerous times.  The quality of the murals is top notch.

This mural was painted by BMike Odums and Rick Williams last September.   At first, I was disappointed with the truck parked in the way, but the more I looked at my photo, the more I liked it sitting in front of the mural.  The colors of the truck match the mural and you get an idea of size.

Pike Place Market

So I’m keeping with the Seattle theme and posting another photo from that wonderful area.  I spent a little time around the famous market and enjoyed myself.  But I struggled to find anything that I wanted to photograph.  Weird how that works!  Some times I just don’t see “it”.  My own person version of writer’s block.  Anyway, that’s what happened to me at this spot.    So I ended up capturing this photo of the market’s sign (not the most creative photo).  As you can tell, it was Christmas time when I was there.

Peruvian Market

I’ve been busy with work this week.  Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to post on my normal schedule and tonight’s post will be short.

So here you go….  This is a photo I took at a market in a small Peru village.   From our experience during our 10-day trip, this is a very typical market for tourist to select high quality hand crafts.

Detroit Graffiti

Here is another picture from my trip to Detroit last summer with Jay Cassidy.  Work and my volunteer activities have had me very busy lately.  Sorry I missed posting anything the last few days.  And tonight’s blog post will be short as well.  Have a great weekend.

Malt Graffiti

This is another photo from the graffiti scene in the Eastern Market District of Detroit.  This one was painted/created by the talented Malt.  Malt is a self-taught artist who is based in Detroit.  As par of the 2012 Detroit Beautification Project, he painted a number of large-scale murals in the area.  You can see more of his work on his website:  http://brownbagdetroit.com

The Seventh Letter

Here is another graffiti photo from the Eastern Market in Detroit.  This entire area has so many amazing sanctioned graffiti projects.  I’ve never seen anything like it.  Around every corner is a huge painting from different artists.  Just good stuff!!

Insane In The Brain

As you can imagine, there was a ton of graffiti all around Detroit.  Most of it is the typical quick “tag” type work you see in any city….the quick hit and run type of graffiti they do before someone catches them.  Some areas of Detroit have embraced graffiti and they invite great graffiti artist from all over the world to come paint wonderful pieces of art on the buildings, walls, etc…

Well the Eastern Market, which is a huge farmers market area with little shops and stores around it, has done this.  It is like walking around a huge outdoor art gallery.  Many of the paintings were huge.

Tonight’s photo is called “Insane In The Brain” by Okuda San Miguel, who I think is from Europe.  I looked at his website and can’t read the foreign language, but he appears to be from that area of the world.  He had done work in Asia, America, etc….

Anyway, this painting was my favorite and it was probably around 20 feet tall by 25 feet wide.  Its’ amazing and my photo doesn’t do it justice.
