Old Soviet Facilities in Ukraine

Here are a few more photos from my Ukraine trip (pre-war).  All of these were taken near the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor and within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.

I hope the Ukraine military and people can keep on giving the Russian military a good fight and that they stay safe.

I really wanted to return to Chernobyl in 2020, but like all good things this year, COVID messed that up.  Let’s hope that trip can happen in 2021.  Here is a photo I took from 2018 at the Soviet Nuclear Missile Detection site.

Cadet Chapel Spires

Hello Tuesday!!  How was your day?  My day was pretty good…

About this photo:  I took this shot last December while I was in Colorado Springs for a class.  I slipped away from the group and took an Uber out to the U.S. Air Force Academy to visit the Cadet Chapel.  I took all kinds of photos of the inside and outside using the traditional perspectives.  But I also took some unique perspectives like this one.  I was trying to capture this beautiful structure in a way that most wouldn’t have considered.

US Navy F-18 Hornets

At last weekend’s Steelers playoff game, these 2 jets flew over the stadium after the national anthem was played.  I think these are US Navy F-18 Hornets, but I’m not 100% sure.  Do you know?

By the way, this is another example of minimalistic photography.  What is that you ask?  It is a style using a minimum amount of components such as color, shape, line, and texture.   It is highly subjective and the meaning is up to the perception of the viewer.

Minimalist

Today’s picture is one I took at a Steelers’ game last season as a U.S. Military Special Forces team parachuted into the stadium.  I’ve been thinking about Minimalist Photography for a while now.  So I went back to find this photo, because I knew it fit within this genre.  I’ve posted a few minimalist photos over the last few weeks so see how they did.   I hope you like the style and this photo.  Its simple, clean, and tells a story.

Something Totally Different

Tonight I have something different from what I normally post.  I took this picture last summer while on a visit to Georgia.  This is from within the Aviation Museum at Warner Robins Air Force Base.  Honestly I don’t know what type of plane this is and won’t look it up.  The last time I looked up an airplane name from the museum’s website, I had people telling me that I was wrong.  So I’ll just leave it at this…..  It is a very cool looking plane.

Harrier Jump Jet

The Harrier (or sometimes called the Jump Jet) is a military plane capable of taking off vertically.  Its features were displayed well in the 1994 True Lies action moving staring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis and Tom Arnold.  I took this picture inside the Charlotte Air Museum last year prior to visiting my brother’s family.

Special Note Again Tonight:

GoToTravelNow.com featured my picture of Dyrholaey Lighthouse in an article of amazing lighthouses in Iceland.  You can see the article by clicking the photo below.

A-10 Thunderbolt

This is a 7 exposure auto-bracketed set merged together using Photomatix Pro and edited in Photoshop CS6.  I took this photo during the summer on my visit to Georgia.  My son and I went down there to visit a great friend of mine, who I met over twenty years ago while I was in the military.

During my time in the military, I spent lots of quality time around A-10s in the Middle East.  This specific A-10 is sitting outside the Warner Robins U.S. Air Force Aviation Museum.

Douglas A4 Skyhawk

I would like to start by telling you I am sorry I haven't posted anything lately with my normal every other day routine.  I’ve had some additional travel, which took Blair and I down to Georgia.  On the way, we stopped in Charlotte to visit family.  While we where there, we went to the Carolinas Aviation Museum  (http://www.carolinasaviation.org/).  It is a relatively small air museum but it had some interesting items.

This is a picture from that spot.  It is a Douglas A4 Skyhawk, which is a carrier capable attack aircraft developed for the United States Navy and Marines.  It went into use in the early 1960s and was used by the USA into the 1990s.  It is still in use by some militaries around the world today such as the Brazilian Navy.

Memorial Day

An American holiday, which occurs every year on the final Monday of May.  Memorial Day is a day to remember men and women who died while serving in the armed forces.  The holiday started after the Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the war.   Later the holiday was extended to honor any veteran who died while serving.  Most Americans have no idea how it started or what it is about.  They just think of it as a holiday to start summer.

I spent some time this morning at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies walking around looking at the graves.  I don’t have any family, friends or anyone else I know buried at the cemetery.  I was happy to see a bunch of people arriving at the cemetery to visit graves of their loved ones.  It just seemed appropriate and it was nice to see people doing the right thing for a change.

Daily Photos – I took these photos today while walking through the cemetery.  I don’t know these guys and I am sure they deserved more.  Zachary was 22 and Brandon wasn’t even 22 years old yet.  So sad.  I appreciate their sacrifice.
