Up or Down

I really don’t know what to say about this photo.  I’ve been to this spot numerous times over the years and taken photos on these stairs a few different times.  I took this version back in 2018.  This is an iconic abandoned spot in Pittsburgh that moves back and forth between locked up and wide open.  The last time I went, it was locked up.

Presby Again

Keeping with the season, here is another holiday photo from within First Presbyterian Church in downtown Pittsburgh.  It’s a great facility and they do a nice job decorating it for the Christmas season.  I took this one from the balcony.

Greek Orthodox Church

MJ, Scott, Kris and I were on our way to our dinner reservations, when we found this wonderful temple right next door to our destination.  It was very dark inside, and I loved it.  Why I don’t know, but I just liked the mood of the place.  If felt safe, cool, comfortable, old...  The entrance to this temple (the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church – opened in December 1858) was unlocked, but the rest of the church was secured…probably to keep people like me out.  Meanwhile, the group just wanted me to finish up quickly so we could go eat.

By the way, the restaurant was amazing.  We ate at Griechenbeisl, which happens to be the oldest restaurant in Vienna Austria.  It was founded in 1447 and I can see why.  The food was outstanding.

St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery

This amazing facility is still functioning as a monastery in Kiev Ukraine.  It is located on the Dnieper River in a beautiful portion of the city.  It was built in the Middle Ages by Sviatopolk II Iziaslavych.  Unfortunately, the original cathedral was demolished by the Soviets in the 1930s and was reconstructed in 1999 after the Ukrainian independence.  Blair and I climbed bell tower in the surrounding walled structure to get this photo.

Marseille

What do you think of this cathedral?  Or should I say, cathedral walls and ceiling?  I couldn’t really get a good photo aimed lower due to the dozens of tourists in the way.  So, I aimed higher to avoid them ruining my photo.  This cathedral is the amazing Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde.  Otherwise known as “the Mariners church”.  It sits up on a large hill overlooking the city of Marseille France and the beautiful southern France coast.

The stripped interior design is very unique for a church or frankly any building interior.  The inside also has a great collection of small scale boat models (donated by sailors) on shelves and hanging from the ceiling.  The sailors give them upon returning from a dangerous trip or in advance to bring them safety.  The construction was completed in 1864 with parts of it started in 1214.  Amazing spot!!

St. Joseph's Catholic Church

This little beautiful church is surrounded on three sides by a huge mall in downtown San Antonio Texas.  The only side not blocked by the mall from the street.  From the outside, this church looks like any other around the country.  But when you go inside, you find this exceptionally decorated temple.  Just beautiful.

Pennsylvania Classic

I need to hit this spot up again.  The last time I was there, I only got about 10 minutes of shooting before we got kicked out.  One of the neighbors called the police, who were very nice and just concerned about our safety.  I’d like to have time to really capture this beauty properly.

St. Barts Church

On our trip to St. Barts, I darted into the St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church to capture some photos of the inside.  I ran into the Parish Administrator (Philip), who gladly allowed me access.  I was and still am appreciative because I captured this great image during those few moments.  Thanks Philip!!

By the way, St. Barts is an outstanding place.   I recommend you put it on your travel bucket list.

Basilica Cathedral de Lima (Peru)

We didn’t get a chance to enter this beautiful Roman Catholic Church, but we spent some time in the Plaza Mayor across the street.  The construction started on this building in 1535.  The construction was completed three years later in 1538 and has been remodeled since a few times.

It was very disappointing that every church is Lima would charge you to enter (just to look) and wouldn’t allow photography….  Ugh!!!!   Anyway, it was cool to look at from the outside.

To get an idea of scale, look closely at the cars and people in front of the building.  Cool stuff!!
