Sunrise Seattle

MJ and I spent a little time early one morning at Kerry Park in Seattle.  Great views from this spot.

Pete Carroll

We’re one week away from the start of the NFL regular season.  I’m ready, are you?

For the second year in a row, COVID is messing up the NFL season (along with our entire world) and once again due to COVID restrictions, I’ll need to get game media credentials on a game-by-game basis.  I’ve been very fortunate in the past and was granted season access.  They’ve limited media access, which is completely understandable.

So, I probably won’t be covering every game this season, but I’m hopeful I’ll get to photograph many of them.  This will be my tenth year covering the Steelers…. I’ve been very lucky (I also work pretty darn hard, but also very lucky) ….in my career, relationships, photography and in life generally.  I’m grateful!!

By the way, I took this photo of Seattle Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll during the 2019 season.  Have a great football season.  I hope your team wins.

Tomlin and Wilson

I took this photo post game at Heinz Field in 2019.  It was nice capturing Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin and Seattle Seahawks Quarterback Russell Wilson chatting with each other.  You could tell there was mutual respect between them.

Playoffs - Seahawks

More NFL playoff games today.  Today, they have the Titans vs the Chiefs and then the Seahawks vs the Packers for us to watch.

Here is a photo I took of Russell Wilson earlier this year when Seattle was in Pittsburgh.  I captured this on the field after the game while he was being interviewed.  How about that hair!!

Russell Wilson

It was a nice weather day at the stadium today.  The home crowd didn’t get the win they wanted, but the game was entertaining.  This was my first time covering the Seahawks.  It was fun seeing them up close and watching Russell Wilson ( @dangerusswilson ) do his thing.

Seattle Sunset

This photo is fairly old…maybe four or five years old.  I don’t remember what year I traveled to Seattle.  I could look it up, but I’m lazy as well.  This photo has been processed and sitting on my hard drive waiting for it’s turn to see the world.   I just forgot about it until this morning.  I sat at this spot for about 4 hours taking pictures from early evening, through sunset and afterward into the blue hour.  As you can see, it was a beautiful evening.

Cool Library

Why can’t every city have a cool library like this?  Seattle has it going on when it comes to library building design!  This ultra-contemporary glass and metal structure is awesome inside and out.  If your ever in the Emerald City, make this one of your stops.  It’s worth checking out.

Seattle In Gray

I took this photo a few years ago and it’s been sitting on my hard drive waiting to be processed.  I finished it recently and decided to make it a black and white photo.  I loved the city of Seattle…. It was such a great city and I’m ready to return.

Seattle's Space Needle

Can you think of a more iconic item for Seattle?  I can’t.  So tonight’s post is of the Space Needle.  I took this in late 2014 while on a work trip to Seattle.  It was a great trip both professionally and personally.  By the way, can you tell that I’ve been processing photos from this Seattle trip?  It probably wasn’t to hard to figure out since I’ve posted a few photos recently the Emerald City.

Seattle At Night

I took this photo a few years ago, but just processed it tonight.  Sometimes it takes me a long time to get my photos processed.  When it takes between 20 minutes to an hour to process one photo, you can see why it takes me a while.

Anyway, I scouted this location in advance and it didn’t let me down.  I left the airport, got my rental car and drove right to this spot.  It was worth it.

Pioneer Square Station

MJ is out of town for very long business trip and I miss her dearly.  I can’t wait for her to get home next week and in the mean time, I’ll just keep missing her.

Tonight’s photo is from the Pioneer Square Station in downtown Seattle.  I took this last late last year when I was out there for work.  I had a few days to photograph the city and I made good use of my time.  I took this picture at around midnight.  The only people in the station were the police, the homeless and I.

Amazing View

Here is another photo from my Seattle trip last December.  I wasn’t out there for long (about 5 days), but I love it.  I got about 2 full days by myself to geek out and take all the photos I could fit into that time.

I spent about 4 full hours sitting at this site waiting for the perfect light.  I think I found it.  I hope you like it.

Red Hallway

On the 4th floor of the Seattle Central Library, the entire hallway is this bright red (floors, ceilings, walls, etc…).  Off this hallway are conference rooms, classrooms, and offices.  The red is a large contrast to the blues, metal, and glass that dominates the rest of the library.

Seattle's Funky Library

Here is another shot of the Seattle Central Library.  I posted another photo of this building back in March.  You can see it here:

http://brook-ward.com/blog/2015/3/5/seattle-central-library

This building is so weird.  I don’t even know how to describe it.  When I looked it up later, the architect couldn’t even put a specific design style on this structure.  Maybe modern contemporary is the best way to describe it.  There are lots of funky angles, bright colors, unusual spaces.  Around every corner, the building design changes to the point that they don’t even go together.  So I felt like I was in a different building when I changed areas within the building, instead of one continuous building.  So my take on this building is that it fits the Seattle culture.

I took this photo from the 4th floor balcony looking out at the building support structure and the diamond shaped glass exterior wall.  Like I said, funky!!!

If you ever get to Seattle, check this place out.

Space Needle

I loved the Seattle skyline.  You can’t have the Seattle skyline without the Space Needle landmark (single most recognizable symbol of Seattle) included in a photo.  I don’t know if it’s a law, but it should be.  I’ve seen it on TV and in a thousand photos.  But until I stood there from sunset to past dusk, I didn’t appreciate how wonderful this city looks.  It was worth the trip, just to sit there at sunset watching the city.  Put that activity on your bucket list!!

Space Needle:  I thought you’d like a little information about this structure.  It was built in the Seattle Center for the 1962 World’s Fair, which had over 2.3 million visitors.  It is 605 feet high, 138 feet wide, and weighs 9,550 tons.  It was built to withstand winds up to 200 miles per hour and earthquakes of up to 9.1 magnitudes.  The observation deck is at 520 feet with the gift shop and rotating SkyCity restaurant at 500 feet.

Seattle Central Library

This facility is the flagship library of the Seattle Public Library system.  It is an 11-story glass and steel building that opened in 2004 with over 362,000 square feet.  It can hold over 1.45 million books, has an underground parking for 143 vehicles and has over 400 public computers.  I was one of over 2 million visitors in 2014 to this very modern looking building.  On the day I visited, the place was packed with people using every area of the building.  I’ll have to post more photos of this facility later, because it is so unique….just totally different from anything you’ve probably ever seen.

Seattle At Dawn

Here is a 25-exposure panorama of Seattle At Dawn.  I went to this spot the night before and took some pictures after dark.  I liked it so much, I returned the very next morning before sunrise to get this picture.

Pioneer Square Station

During my time in Seattle, I had a packed photography agenda covering lots of the city and the surrounding area.  One of the planned locations was the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel station called Pioneer Square Station.  I arrived at this location at around 11pm and the place was basically empty.  The station is huge, so the 20 homeless people, 5 police and I had lots of room to avoid each other.  Although, I’ll admit that 3 different police officers stopped me for taking photos.  I thought that was interesting since the homeless can live in the station, but photographing the facility apparently isn’t allowed.

Anyway, this station handles the Sound Transit Central Link light rail trains, Sound Transit buses and King County Metro buses.  It is completely underground with entrances at the corners.  I don’t know about you, but I think there is beauty in the design of this station.

Seattle Skyline

As you probably read in my past blog posts, I loved my time experiencing and photographing Seattle.  Why???  Because of the great locations like this one.  I took this photo from Kerry Park looking back at the city skyline so that I could see the Space Needle, skyline and Mount Rainier in the same frame.  What a cool location!!

This specific photo was taken at sunset.  I shot from this site on my visit during a sunset and sunrise.  I think I got lucky, since a local photographer told me that they only get about 10 good days per year, where you can see Mount Rainier this clear.  On both of my days, it was easy to see.  Lucky.
