San Juan's Final Resting Place

I’ve posted a few pictures from this cemetery in the past.  This is the Capilla del Cementerio Santa Maria in old San Juan Puerto Rico.  I’m not ready for this spot to be my home yet, but when the time comes….this might be a great location.  It has beautiful architecture, great history, a Spanish fort and an ocean view.   Wow….

Final Destination

I don’t know why I selected this photo for tonight’s post.  Maybe I’m just looking forward to our next trip to the Caribbean.  Of course, MJ still wants more African animals.  Anyway, this is of the Capilla del Cementerio Santa Maria in old San Juan Puerto Rico.

Capilla del Cementerio Santa Maria Magdalena de Pazzis

I took this photo during our last trip to Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.  I’ve been to Old San Juan numerous times, but I never explored the cemetery until this visit.  I got lots of great photos of this spot.

Here is information on this location that I found on Puerto Rico Historic Building Drawings Society FB page.  Their FB page states that this is a colonial-era cemetery that is the final resting place of many prominent residents.  They started construction in 1863 outside of the walls of Fort Felipe del Morro fortress over looking the Atlantic Ocean.  I found the place very interesting and beautiful in its own way.

Bull Sharks

We had a wonderful time scuba diving recently with 12 female bull sharks off the Playa del Carmen beach in Mexico.  It was a nice relaxing; slow paced dive watching these great creatures swim around us (no cage).  I can’t get enough of the sharks.  I’ve dove with Great Whites, Tiger sharks, Sand Tiger Sharks, Bull Sharks, Reef sharks, Caribbean sharks, etc….  Such wonderful animals.    Wow, what a great day diving with Phocea Mexico!!  Check them out if you are ever in this area and want to dive with Bull Sharks, reef dives or in the cenotes.

Cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore

Unfortunately like many popular spots, there were tourists all over the place.  So I aimed the camera up a little to avoid all the people standing between the Cathedral and I.  By the way, this Cathedral is located in Florence Italy.  This is a great spot with a nice courtyard in front of the church.   They started building this facility in 1296 and finished it in 1436.  As you can tell, it was a small construction project since it took them 140 to complete it.

Merry Christmas - Mexican Bull Shark!!!

MJ and I just got back from a trip to Michigan, Puerto Morelos Mexico, back to Michigan and now home in Pennsylvania.  We had a great time visiting my family and her parents in Michigan and spending time with her family in Mexico.  It was a very nice trip all around and we didn’t have any travel issues, which was a small miracle with the weather problems during our travel periods.

We met some new friends, Don and Lori, while we were in Mexico.  They are from Holland Michigan and we talked with them just about every day.  It was nice getting to know them and share some scuba diving stories.

I would also like to express my thanks to Phocea Mexico ( http://www.phoceamexico.com/)

This is a nice scuba shop very close to the beach in Playa del Carmen Mexico.  They were extremely professional, nice and provided a wonderful experience.  Thank you to Martine who communicated with me in advance via email and over the phone while I was in Mexico.  She was wonderful.  Dani was very nice and provided a warm welcome when I arrived.  The Dive Master Mark (see a picture of him below) was extremely polite, knowledgeable and was an instant friend. Thanks to all of them and their fellow co-workers.  I’ve used literally dozens of dive shops in tons of countries and they are the best I’ve dealt with while traveling.  Top Notch all around.  Thanks

Today’s photo:  I took this picture while diving with Phocea Mexico about a quarter mile out from the main swimming beach in Playa del Carmen Mexico.  This was the 3rd dive of the day.  We did two reef dives earlier and saw Bull Sharks in the distance during those dives.  The 3rd dive was to specifically find and dive with these sharks.  In my past shark dives with Great Whites, Tiger Sharks, Lemon Sharks, Reef Sharks, etc.. the crew would use chum to get the sharks to come in close to us.  Not here!!!  We literally took the boat out from the beach, went over the side of the boat, dropped quickly to the sandy bottom at about 60 feet deep and waited.  Within about two minutes the sharks found us and came in close for a peek at the visitors in their territory.  After about 10 minutes they got bored of us and moved off….I thought.  Later when we starting to swim back up to the boat, one of them followed us right to the surface.  Nothing like looking down and finding a 10-foot bull shark 5 feet below your feet…..  I loved every minute.

I took this photo with my Nikon D90 in an Ikelite underwater housing and two Ikelite strobes.  I shot it in Manual mode (f8, ISO100, 120th/second), RAW format, and the shark was about 10 foot away.  Later I used Photomatix Pro to tone map the image and converted it into a black and white (B/W) image in Photoshop CS6.  Converting it into B/W helped make the shark pop out of the image.  The original picture was very blue since there isn’t much light to distinguish colors at below 30 feet.  The color image was a little flat since everything looks blue.  I hope you like it.

Mexican Sunrise & the movie "42"

Tonight MJ and I went to see the new movie “42”, which is about Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier into MLB baseball.  There are some slow parts in the movie, but it was very well made, interesting, and kept my attention.   There are very few movies where the crowd claps at the end, but that’s what happened tonight.

Today’s Picture:

This is a sunrise I captured with a 5 exposure set last August while MJ and I were on vacation in the Playa del Carmen area of Mexico.  We stayed at a great hotel.  I love this picture because it just seems to be such a peaceful image.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro

I got lazy tonight and almost forgot to post a photo.  I think because I had such a great day with MJ today, I just forgot.   We didn’t do much… went out for lunch, went shopping, took care of a few things around the house and watched a movie.  But I enjoyed all of it.

So because I didn’t plan ahead, you’re getting another vacation picture.  But who are we kidding; you’ll be seeing lots of them in the future.  There are to many great photos from my last trip.  This picture is of Castillo San Felipe del Morro Fort in Old San Juan at sunset.  I love this picture.  By the way, the composition of this picture was MJ’s idea.

Old San Juan At Sunset

As you’ve probably noticed, I’ve been out of touch for the last week.  The reason for my absence was due to a Caribbean cruise with family and friends.  We traveled to San Juan to get on the ship and from there we stopped at Barbados, St. Kitts, St. Thomas, St. Lucia and St. Maarten.  We had a wonderful time, wonderful weather, and I captured some great photos.

Tonight’s photo is from the western end of Old San Juan.  We arrived in San Juan and went straight to our hotel.  After checking in, we took a taxi to my favorite Caribbean city…..Old San Juan.  The architecture, the old Spanish forts, blue cobble stone streets, shops, and history are amazing.  MJ and I had dinner at great local restaurant, walked the city streets and ended our day watching the sunset at the Castillo San Felipe del Morro fort.  The fort construction started in 1539 and took decades to finish.

Photo Technique:

This is a 5 exposure set (+2, +1, 0, -1, -2) taken in Aperture priority using my Nikon D800 and the Nikon 14-24mm 2.8f lens.  I processed the images in Photomatix Pro and completed some minor edits in Photoshop CS6.
